During an official visit to Spain, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with members of the Indian diaspora, emphasizing their pivotal role in fostering a positive image of India abroad. In a significant announcement, he revealed that India and Spain will celebrate 2026 as a ‘dual year’, focusing on culture, tourism, and artificial intelligence (AI) to deepen bilateral ties.

Speaking at the interaction, Jaishankar highlighted the successful meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez last year, noting it as a turning point in strengthening relations.

“Our relations are poised to move to the next stage, and the diaspora plays an indispensable role in this transformation,” he remarked.

Highlighting the robust annual trade of $10 billion between the two nations, Jaishankar expressed optimism about further growth. He identified areas like railways, clean technology, drones, and space exploration as potential sectors for enhanced collaboration.

“Developments in the world will bring us closer. In times of global instability, countries with strong supply chain ties and mutual interests can forge even stronger relationships,” he said.

Jaishankar praised the Indian diaspora in Spain, sharing feedback from Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares about their contributions to the economy and society.

“The Indian community’s image here is very positive. Their talent and professionalism are greatly valued,” he quoted Albares as saying. He further added, “When our diaspora builds a positive image of India abroad, it lays the foundation for stronger international relations.”

The announcement of 2026 as a ‘dual year’ marks a unique initiative to celebrate shared interests in culture, tourism, and AI.

“Throughout 2025, we will work hard to prepare for 2026, which will serve as a milestone year to celebrate our deepening ties,” Jaishankar stated.

This visit marks Jaishankar’s first official trip to Spain as External Affairs Minister. His itinerary, which concluded on January 14, included engagements aimed at reinforcing diplomatic, trade, and cultural ties between the two nations.

The announcement of the ‘dual year’ underscores the evolving partnership between India and Spain, reflecting a shared vision for cultural exchange, economic collaboration, and technological innovation.
